In March 2024 I attended a residency on Dartmoor facilitated by Mayes Creative. Our cohort was introduced to The Lych Way or the Way Of The Dead. This 12 mile track over the moore to the church at Lydford was the way that all the corpses from the villages on the southern moor would have to carried in order to be buried.
Collecting fallen sticks, moss and lichen from the path I reassembled these elements into an effigy in memorandum of those souls who carried their dead… of the dead themselves and in grief of that connection that we once had as a society with our deceased.
Co-Capturing these fragments on 16mm with residency leader and artist Joanna Mayes; Jo then introduced me to the process of brewing up non-toxic plant based film developer from the very forest floor within which we were shooting.
I am now developing the soundtrack to this in-camera edited, double exposed film with artist Winter James.
