Eggbox Films is the creative practice of award winning multi-disciplinary artist, photographer and filmmaker David McNulty, also known as Donshades.
Based between Scotland, Yorkshire and London Don’s artistic enquiry explores the delicate relationships that govern our interactions with constructed, social and natural environments; interrogating received notions of identity, memory and time while drawing inspiration from folk traditions and cultural practices, contemporary digital constructs, restorative agricultural practices and dream work.
Don’s working thesis upholds film as a vehicle for positive social change through posing provocations that incite introspection and abstracted self-awareness in his audiences. Who are ‘We’? And why do we so often perceive ourselves as humans as such seperate entities from the interconnected web of life, flora and fauna that make up the world around us? Do we not all eventually return to the soil…
Don’s film works have been presented at the Open City Documentary festival in London (2018), The Zoom-Zblizenia festival Poland (2017), The Venice Institute of Contemporary Art (2019), the Blow-Up Festival of Artist’s moving image in Chicago (2020) and Aesthetica Short Film Festival in York, UK (2023).

In March 2024, Don took residency with ACE funded Mayes Creative on Dartmoor learning sustainable darkroom practices that use plant-based analogue film developing techniques to bypass the toxicity inherent in the chemicals used by a traditional film laboratory.
Since 2017 Don has favoured analogue filmmaking tools, methods and practices with which to craft his unique style of oneiric imagery with each of his projects thematically connected in their responses to the question; what did we forget and why? For it is within the plurality of answers to this question that we might find a way to forge a more ecologically sustainable future.
